TOMMI'S SAAB

Saab-reading from my bookshelf

GENERAL

Saab - The First 40 Years
Björn-Eric Lindh

The official Saab history. Excellent general reading, with a huge amount of photos from Saab archives.

Availlable at least in Swedish, English and Finnish. (German?)

FORM & FUNCTION: SAAB'S APPROACH TO DESIGNING AND BUILDING CARS. 1998
(Form & Funktion - Vår syn på konsten att bygga bilar.)

A brochure in book format. Almost 100 pages of info on the more modern Saabs and "Saabisms".

At least Swedish and English availlable.

FORM & FUNCTION: SAAB'S APPROACH TO DESIGNING AND BUILDING CARS. 2007
(Form & Funktion - Vår syn på konsten att bygga bilar. 2007)

Saab 900 - A Swedish story.
Saab 900 - En svensk historia.
Anders Tunberg, 1993.

The concept, design, engineering, manufacturing and marketing of the "NG" 900. The book also has a short general history of Saab. Great book! So much stuff and nice photos!

The Spirit of SAAB
Rolf Bleeker

The not so official Saab history. A collection of anecdotes and short stories of the events and people around Saabs, and ofcourse, about Saabs as such. Bleeker interviewed a lot of people (workers, designers, rally-drivers, etc.) for this book. Very entertaining, funny and full of detail for a Saab-nut!

I think its availlable in English and in German.

Saab 9-5, En personligt historia
Anders Tunberg 1997

The story of the then new Saab 9-5

144 pages, over 200 pictures

MR SAAB - Erik Carlsson
Page One Publishing 1999

The back cover says it all:
"Mr. Saab is the tale of the legendary rally star Erik Carlsson ... The book is full of excitement and is a piece of fascinating automobile history told by Erik Carlsson himself and the people that were with him during his great Saab success story. "Mr. Saab" contains hundreds of historic and unique photographs about the world's first rally star."

Amazing book, my absolute new favorite!

TECHNICAL

Saab Korjaamon käsikirja 2-t (1965)
Saab Workshop Manual for two strokers 1965

The official Saab Workshop manual is top of the line. You cannot find a better manual for your stroker.

The drawback is that they are rare and often quite expensive if you manage to find someone willing to sell...

(Mine is the Finnish edition)

Saab 95/96 V4 Owners Workshop Manual - Haynes

Excellent DIY book on Saab V4 models from 1966 to 1975. Essential.

I think there's a reprint availlable.
(From 1988 according to Amazon)

Saab 95 ja 96, 1960 - 64 (In Finnish)

I have a photocopy of this excellent little DIY book on the bullnose Saab 96. Huge amount of practical info stuffed on the pages. I got it from this guy that said it's part of booklet series, that has several parts on different cars, but I have no knowledge as to what series he was referring to. (availlable in Finnish only)

There are some scans of the 1960 2-Stroke Owner's Manual on Shan's pages, which seems to have some of the same material as this one, but it isn't quite as complete.

Saab Genuine Spare Parts Book
Saab 93 1956-1959
Saab 95 1960-1968
Saab 96 1960-1968

Most essential. Excellent isometric drawings, on all parts, together with serial numbers and model details. You really can't do without if you have a two stroke project. (Swedish/English in same manual)

Spare Parts List - Reservdelskatalog 1965

The Saab spare parts books are most helpful in any restoration project.

This one is for the "long nose" stroker (Saab 96 1965-66).

Virittäjän käsikirja 4, kaksitahtimoottorit
Esko Mauno

A very basic book about two stroke engines and their tuning. Basic introduction to two-stroke engines.

There's probably a similar book availlable on your chosen language.

Two-Stroke Performance Tuning
A. Graham Bell

Excellent and detailed book about two-stroke engine tuning, also helpful in understanding the inner workings of any stroker. Mainly focused on bikes and gokarts, but gives a huge amount of info if you are interested in getting something extra out of your two stroke Saab.

There's plenty of litterature availlable on Saab's, but these are my favorites and I have found them very helpful.

Some links:

For online info on classic Saabs, check the Swedish Saab Club, www.saabklubben.com, also availlable in English (click the flag in upper right hand corner).

For manuals / prochures online, see Shan's pages:
http://www.geocities.com/vintagesaab/index.html

Of particular interest are the two Saab performance tuning manuals: Chilton Saab 96 repair manual on Competition Tuning the 850 cc stroker and Directions on competition modification of the Saab V4.

You might also want to see the Old Car Manual Project. As I'm writing this, it only has a Sonett II user manual of the Saabs. Hopefully they will get more Saab manuals online.
